NYC Street Style: Happy Friday!

I normally try to keep a backlog of street style fashion photos on hand in case I’m not able to shoot, but due to travel and other things I was completely out of shots after Wednesdays post. So, I hit the streets of SoHo last night and saw some things I thought you might enjoy.

Enjoy the fashion. And the glimpse of New York City.

I loved this. Why? Because it’s different. Not only is she wearing a ball cap, she’s rocking it backwards.

Notice the pockets on the front of her dress? Details matter.

In motion on Lafayette.

I’m starting to see lots of dresses/skirts that have interesting cuts at the bottom. Another example of the high/low look is directly below.

These tend to look great when you are walking or if the wind blows while standing.

I hope you enjoy this shot as much as I do. Seen crossing Broadway.

Tossing on a blazer with sweat pant shorts. I assume he’s heading to the gym.

I don’t necessarily like taking photos behind people, but sometimes that’s where the detail is. This shot doesn’t do her dress justice, but it looked lovely.

Check the shoes.

Now for a little behind the scenes. As I was waiting on the subway I saw this girl standing in front of me. Some people can pull off the old school looking high-waist denim shorts well, and she happens to be one of them. But once I saw the shot I thought to myself, “you need a shot from the front,” and that’s when I started debating whether or not I’d approach her. When this isn’t done spontaneously questions start to come to mind like, “Will she think I’m a creep?” “Will she say no to the shot.” and so on.

Just as the subway came in the station I decided to not let the moment pass and she was kind enough to allow me to take the shot. The red purse and black shoes really seemed to bring this home for me.

I normally don’t edit photos in Photoshop at all, but I thought I’d tool around with this second shot just a bit. Edits can create nice effects, but it just doesn’t give you the “real” look that I like to share. Anyway, great outfit.

The edit almost makes it look like a movie still though, which is beautiful in its own right.

Love your blog! Quick question for you: do you always ask permission to snap photos of the people in your blog? I was toying with the idea of doing a street style blog myself, but I’m much too shy to approach people!!

Thank! No, I don’t always ask people if I can take their photo. The reason isn’t due to fear; it’s more because most people don’t know how to pose and when they try it completely messes up the shot. That, and the fact that, for Fashables, I try to capture candid shots. There’s an art to asking people if you can take their photo and it’s something you’d just have to get comfortable with over time.

candid shots are the way to go, but just wondering: do you ask them afterwards? like show the pic and ask them if it’s ok to post online? (doesn’t apply to girls on speeding bikes. obviously :)
